Installing Windows 8.1 on Mac Using Bootcamp: A Guide
Note: The following Mac models do not support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021, and other Apple devices with M1 chips.
To determine if your Mac can run Windows 8.1, perform these steps:
- Access the Apple menu at the top of your screen.
- Choose About this Mac to see your system details.
Note: On Intel-based PCs, the processor is listed. On Macs, you’ll see the type of chip used.
Follow these instructions:
Update Your Software
Note: Ensure all macOS software is updated before installing Windows.
- Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
- Select Software Update.
- If your system is current, a notification will state that no updates are available.
Note: The system automatically checks for updates. Please wait momentarily for the process to complete. If updates are found, select Update Now and follow the prompts to install.
Note: If your Mac reboots post-update, revisit Software Update to complete any pending installations.
Preparing Your Mac for Windows
The Boot Camp Assistant tool readies your Mac for Windows by creating a new partition named BOOTCAMP and downloading necessary support software.
Note: If you're on a laptop, plug in the device before you continue.
- Insert a USB drive into your Mac and launch Boot Camp Assistant from Applications > Utilities.
- At the intro screen, press Continue.
- Choose all the necessary options and press Continue.
- Select the Windows 8.1 .iso file you've downloaded along with the USB drive for the install file.
- Adjust the desired amount of space for Windows by moving the center bar, then click Install.
- Your Mac will restart and initiate the Windows 8.1 installation process.
Note: You cannot modify the partition size once set.

Installing Boot Camp in Windows
Following the Windows installation, Boot Camp drivers specific to your Mac model will begin installing.
- Adhere to the on-screen instructions during the Boot Camp setup.
- Once installation is completed, click Finish.
- Restart your device and follow any further prompts to install other necessary software.
Note: Avoid cancelling the installation by not pressing the Cancel button during setup.
Note: If a prompt appears about software not meeting Windows logo testing, select Continue.
Note: During the installation, if a dialog box prompts for device software installation, select Install. Check for any obscured windows if the installation seems inactive.
