Installing Windows 7 on a Mac Using Bootcamp: A Step-by-Step Guide
Attention: These models do not support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021, along with any Apple devices sporting an M1 chip.
To verify Windows 7 installation capability, follow these steps:
- Click the Apple logo at the top of your screen.
- Choose About this Mac to see your system's details.
Note: Intel-based PCs display 'Processor', while Apple systems show 'Chip'.
Proceed with the steps below:
Ensure all software updates are applied.
Note: It's crucial to update macOS before installing Windows.
- Log in with administrative rights.
- Close all active programs and other user sessions.
- Navigate to Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- Select General from the sidebar.
- Choose Software Update on the right side (scroll down if needed).
- Apply all available macOS updates.
Note: Should your Mac restart post-update, check Software Update again for any remaining updates.
Prepare your Mac for Windows installation
The Boot Camp Assistant readies your device by setting up a new partition named BOOTCAMP and downloading necessary Boot Camp support software.
Note: Connect your portable Mac to power before continuing.
- Insert your USB drive into the Mac and launch Boot Camp Assistant from Applications > Utilities.
- At the introduction screen, click Continue.
- Choose all necessary options and click Continue.
- Select the Windows 7 .iso file you've downloaded and the USB drive for the installation media.
- Adjust the partition size for Windows by dragging the center bar, then click Install.
- Your Mac will reboot to start the Windows 7 installation process.
Note: You cannot modify the partition size afterwards.

Installing Boot Camp in Windows
Following the Windows installation, the Boot Camp drivers compatible with your Mac will begin installing.
- During the Boot Camp installation in Windows, adhere to the on-screen instructions.
- Once installation concludes, click Finish.
- After rebooting, comply with any prompts from other installation programs that might appear.
Note: Do not press the Cancel button during the installation process.
Note: If a notification suggests the software hasn't passed the Windows logo test, select Continue.
Note: Ignore brief installer dialogues unless a dialogue prompts you to install device software, then click Install. Check for any hidden windows if nothing seems to happen.
Note: If the compatibility software does not install automatically, you'll need to install it manually.
